Flying High With the Los Angeles Angels
The Anaheim Angels began as the Los Angeles Angels in 1961. Since then, they have been known by several different names. In 1966 they became the California Angels, and in 1997 changed again to become the Anaheim Angels. They have since been renamed yet again, officially becoming the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim but are still often referred to as the Anaheim Angels or simply the Angels.
In their first year, the Angels faced the problems of many expansion teams, winning less than half their games. However, they set their first record that year with the most wins of any expansion team in their first year. The record still stands today. Since then, the Anaheim Angels have had their good years and their not so good years, but they are consistent contenders in the game. They have one Wild Card berth, One American League pennant, eight West Division Titles, and in 2002 won their first World Series.
The Anaheim Angels have had several homes. Their first season was played at Wrigley Field. The next four seasons were spent as tenants of Dodger Field. April 9, 1966 marked the team’s first game at their newly built Anaheim Stadium.
In 1996, plans for renovations were agreed upon. The Stadium became known as Edison International Field in 1997, and stayed with that name until the 2004 season when it became known as Angel Stadium of Anaheim, or Angel Stadium for short. Throughout its history, the stadium has also often been referred to simply as the Big “A”.
In their community, the Anaheim Angels are making a big difference in the lives of their fans. They provide scholarships to disadvantaged, academically excellent students each year and in 2007 started their Adopt-a-School program, adopting ten schools each year to donate to and improve. Five of the schools are elementary and five are high schools. The Angels are also involved in other programs, promoting academic excellence, physical fitness, and giving a hand up to those who need it most.
To raise additional funding for their Angels Baseball Foundation, the team has also started selling bricks to fans. These bricks are personalized with a message or your name and installed in the walkway leading up to the main entrance of the stadium. You can also purchase a replica brick to keep in your home.
The Anaheim Angels have had several different logos and have changed their team colors three times. The original logo was a baseball with wings and over it in some fashion were the letters “L.A.” The colors were predominantly blue with red outlines. After several more small changes, the current logo came to be a large “A” wearing a halo. The main color is red with a blue trim.
Baseball has often been referred to as the Great American Pastime. With teams like the Anaheim Angels, it is easy to see why the game is so popular. They play a great game of ball, and have some great fans backing them up. Angels games are exciting and great for the whole family.
